HAIR FASHION NIGHT 2016

We had a busy time at the L’Oreal Professionnel HAIR FASHION NIGHT earlier this month. Our stylists were on hand at Duffield to help guests choose from six looks to try at the event which took place at selected salons all over the world. We had visits from beauty bloggers who tried several different looks including the ‘Flave’ and ‘French Hair’ with the emphasis on learning tips and tricks on how to style hair differently at home.

The collection aims to inspire and showcase the luxurious hair services we offer, from Great Length hair extensions to technically perfect colour and polished, editorially inspired styling. The combination of pearlescent blondes with honeycomb, toasted terracotta and spiced aubergine make a sumptuous colour palette which was applied using freehand techniques by our Art Team Colour Specialists. Photographed by Paul Gill at The Old Hall, the collection will feature throughout our new ‘hair guide’ which will be available in January 2016. THE CLOTHES SHOW 2015: THE IMAGE CATWALK WITH CLOUD NINE

image2-1

We have had teams working backstage at The Clothes Show for several years, it’s a really busy event and it’s great for stylists and apprentices to assist backstage and gain valuable session skills.

image2

The Clothes Show is held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham each year and presents a line up of brands, celebrities and features the ultimate fashion experience including catwalks, trend presentations, shopping, hair and beauty demonstrations and talks from leading industry experts including our very own Angel Montague-Sayers who is the Cloud Nine Hair Ambassador.

Angel presented a quick tutorial once a day on how to get the perfect, salon quality, bouncy blow dry, using the Cloud Nine Wand and The O.

Angel presented a quick tutorial once a day on how to get the perfect, salon quality, bouncy blow dry, using the Cloud Nine Wand and The O.

Angel’s Top Tips:

1. Prep the hair with product before you start styling, her favourite is the TecniArt Constructor. This will give you the hair more texture and a better hold on the final effect.

2. Using heated curlers, curl the top of the head… this will create the effect of a big bouncy blow dry which you get in a salon. Then using a wand, curl the bottom sections of the hair, this will save time and convenience for you.

3. Scrunch every curl whilst it is still hot. This will set it in place and stop it from falling out.

4. When curling the front areas make sure you curl away from the face, it will be more flattering.

Cloud Nine were based on The Image Catwalk which showcases the ‘future of fashion’; graduates and final year students from top Universities and Colleges around the country present their collections on the stage which was hosted by reality TV stars Antonia O’Brien, Jamie Laing and Joey Essex.

The Graduate shows were presented every hour and were 30 minutes long and with just seconds to change into new outfits, the hair was bound to look a bit dishevelled. We sent our fantastic team to assist Angel backstage where they learnt new techniques to bring back to the salon.

The looks were created with only four simple L’Oreal Professionnel products:

  1. Volume Lift Mousse by TecniArt – Top Tip, you can never have too much of this! Spray on to roots section by section and blow dry in until the product is gone. This will give the roots some lift and add volume to create the bouncy blow dry.
  2. Constructor by TecniArt- spray all over the hair to give some texture to work with. When the hair is too smooth the curl will slip out so adding some constructor will help the curl not to drop.
  3. Crepage de Chignon, Wildstylers – this mineral powder fixing spray provides great texture and a volumising effect with a matte finish.
  4. Air Fix, by TecniArt – Spray all over finished hair to keep the style from dropping out.

Not only was Angel and her team backstage styling the hair for the Image Catwalk models but she was on hand to make the presenters stage ready too. Take a look at Angel backstage styling the hair of celebrities such as Jamie Laing, Binky Felsted, Antonia O’Brien, Lauren Pope, Carol Wright and Chloe Lewis.

PANTO FUN AT THE GUILD HALL

Angel , Katie Humphries (Therapist at the Belper salon) and Bonnie-Belle Showers, our newest member at the Sally Montague Hair Group had a very interesting adventure this month when they got asked to do the hair and makeup for Atomic Kitten’s, Natasha Hamilton for a trailer being shot at the Guild Hall, for Derby Live’s Christmas Pantomime ‘Aladdin’.

20150813_145654_LLS

This last minute opportunity was too good to resist and the girls were thrilled to have been chosen to take part. The day started in a hotel room where Angel and Katie beautified the already stunning Natasha Hamilton for her day of press interviews and filming. Angel’s bouncy blow dry was perfected using the TecniArt range of styling products to ensure the style lasted for the busy day ahead.

IMG_20150818_143402

The Director of Derby Live’s version of ‘Aladdin’ was insistent that Natasha’s makeup had to be sexy and what is more sexy than a smoky eyed look? Katie complimented Natasha’s smoky eyes with a nude lip which is ideal for all types of occasions. This look is always effective and could always be vamped up with a deep red lipstick for an evening out. Due to prior appointments at the salons, Angel and Katie could not stay the entire day therefore Bonnie was on hand to help ensure the day went on without a hitch.

IMG_20150813_203922

At Sally Montague Hair Group we used Make Up by HD Brows which has a great long lasting coverage, feels light on your skin and creates fantastic results. The trailer was filmed at the guild hall theatre and touch-up’s were necessary throughout the day due to the hot lighting and long hours for the actors. Not only did we do the touch ups for Natasha but it was also important to make sure that the men had no shine on their faces whilst filming, therefore Bonnie was on stage with the cameraman making sure that the other well known faces such as Dan Osbourne and Richard Nevil and the rest of the cast were camera ready.

GRADUATE FASHION WEEK 2015

Emily Short, Stylist at Belper and the University salon, has been busy assisting backstage at Graduate Fashion Week as part of the young L’Oreal Portfolio Session Team. The four-day event saw 23 BA shows and contributions from 40 UK universities, with nearly 30,000 visitors coming through the doors, making it the largest graduate fashion week in the world.

R-GFW15_ER_LoRes-6300-1

Headed up by Andrea Daley and Lisa Rhead from Barbara Daley, this year’s hair ranged from minimalist ponytails to intricate woven designs embellished with copper leaf and amazing headpieces. No two universities had the same hair, quite a feat when you think that there were 25 shows and 40 colleges involved.

R-GFW-GALA-SHOW-146This was a huge opportunity for Emily to work in a busy backstage environment and she took away a variety of skills and techniques to bring back to the salon.2015-06-01 12.38.28-1

Says Emily “One of the biggest highlights from the event was watching my first look walk down the catwalk, this was the east catwalk at the Liverpool and North Brook show. Myself and the team created a look inspired by Marc Jacobs, where we pulled all the hair forward onto the front on the hairline to create a sleek and smooth feel and then finished it with a lose knot of the front, keeping in the volume and the texture.”

image2“At every catwalk show there were photographers everywhere looking for the newest talent, best creations and also the biggest fails that they can catch on camera, therefore it is vital to be precise when working on the hair. The slightest lack of attention to detail could be caught on camera and ruin the overall look.”

“There are a lot of different elements to consider when working backstage . Not only do you have think about making the hair perfect, but also the hair must suit and compliment the outfits. The outfit could be fantastic, the hair could be spectacular but if they don’t compliment each other then it could become a disaster.

2015-05-31 17-1.03.12

“As a team we created a strong braided style that worked perfectly with the outfits the University fashion students had created.”

Graduate Fashion Week finished with a gala catwalk show, crowning the recipient of this year’s gold award. Hannah Wallace, from Manchester School of Art, was named the winner for her edgy but wearable ski-influenced collection, scooping £10,000.
