LONDON FASHION WEEK SS19

Reporting backstage from London Fashion Week is Zea, our senior stylist from Duffield, with the latest hair trends.

The look- We were shown the finished look which was a slicked down middle parting with sandy texture through the ends of the hair

The How-to- For this we used a light spritz of water spray to create a precise middle parting, then applied Techni art siren waves. Using a dressing out brush I smoothed the hair so that it was tight and flat, then dried it and applied Techni art volume architect ensuring the hair was smooth throughout. Crepe paper was used to wrap around the hair to ensure the hair is kept together whilst we styled the lengths and ends. We were creating a wet textured look through the ends to do this we used Techni Art dual styler bouncy and tender in thick sections through the back applying a lot of product and diffused it until dry.

It was then time for the rehearsal, when the models came back I started on my second model and repeated the process until I got to the diffusing step. Then we hit a stumbling block as the electricity cut out 30 minutes before the models had to be dressed. As we were diffusing the hair there was nothing we could do until the electrics were fixed which was really stressful as the models hair was still wet! Thankfully they managed to get the electric back on so managed to finish the models on time.

I had great time working backstage and can’t wait to hopefully be back next season.

MOST WANTED: BUSINESS THINKER

Sally has been celebrating after beating off nationwide competition to secure a place in the finals of prestigious hairdressing awards Most Wanted, presented by leading industry magazine, Creative HEAD.

Sally proved to be a front-runner in the category Business Thinker, gaining a coveted place at the Most Wanted Grand Final on Monday 3 September at the iconic Natural History Museum. Here, comedian Katherine Ryan will preside over an occasion that sees 600 glamorous A-Listers from the worlds of hair, fashion, beauty and the media come together for a night of Most Wanted celebration.

Established in 2001, Most Wanted recognises the most accomplished names in British hairdressing while the Business Thinker category aims to shine a spotlight on a salon owner who has built an outstanding business.

‘I’m delighted and honoured to be a finalist in such a tough category, our business is constantly expanding and it’s exciting to be shortlisted in such a prestigious competition.’  Sally Montague

The Most Wanted Awards comprise 14 categories recognising creativity and success across a multitude of disciplines, from customer service to commercial innovation. This year’s entries were judged by panel of experts, including the beauty and lifestyle director at Vogue, Jessica Diner.

Past winners have gone on to represent global brands, lead Fashion Week teams from London to New York and work with the world’s most coveted designers.

“Our Most Wanted awards salute the hair professionals who inspire, shape and influence not just the hairdressing industry, but also consumers’ lives. There will be an impressive level of ‘clout’ on display at the Grand Final, and we’re very happy to be able to showcase such great talents” – Catherine Handcock, Publisher, Creative HEAD

ID ARTIST

Earlier this summer Lorna, senior stylist at the Old Hall, successfully auditioned to become a L’Oreal ID Artist. Led by some of the hairdressing industry’s biggest names, ID ARTISTS are coached in the latest catwalk looks, cut and styling techniques, session hairdressing, product innovation and the latest L’Oréal Professionnel seasonal trends. The two-year mentoring programme covers both colour and cutting and styling and has become one of the most sought-after educational opportunities for young hairdressers, inspiring those with an eye for fashion and unique creative expression

LORNA’S DIARY

As I attended the introduction to ID Artist in Leeds I was feeling super excited about the two year journey that I am about to start with L’Oréal. The first day’s session involved learning the importance of social media in the hair styling industry, getting colour trend savvy for AW/17 and a preview of L’Oréal’s new metallic colour range. In addition to this I got to see a demo of two different hair cuts from Saks art team members.
The session ended with Andrew Barton giving us all an insight into the world of being a celebrity hairdresser. Listening to Andrew’s career was very inspiring and left me feeling more motivated than ever to improve and develop my skills as a hair stylist. At the end of the day all of the member’s of the ID artist team’s were invited to a night of bowling, food and drinks. This was a really nice opportunity to meet more of the great people who I will be working and training alongside in the coming years.
During the second day at ID Artist I learned the importance of presenting yourself properly on stage and how to engage with an audience and keep them interested. There was a hands-on styling session with Luke Pluckrose (a session stylist with Saks) and a cutting session with Sarah Clarke-Lees (a member of the Saks art team). These sessions were great as I learned new sectioning techniques and how to use them to create a choppy, layered haircut. We then finished the day with a team building exercise which involved all of the groups acting out a Disney film of their choice.
My first two day’s at ID Artist were amazing and I cannot wait for the next event!

THE KEDLESTON COUNTRY HOUSE

In February we were asked to take part in a styled shoot and open evening at The Kedleston Country House which had a fantastic fiesta theme. We love looking for new hair ideas and this styled shoot was the ideal way to explore unique bridal looks. Lorna, our Senior Stylist at The Old Hall was assisted by Zea (Stylist at Duffield) on the shoot.

Robyn Carter, Weddings coordinator, said of the day…

“Here at The Kedleston we like to have a little fun with our open evenings and think it’s always a great opportunity to get fab suppliers involved in creating something different and unique. As much as we love the simplicity of our venue we wanted to show what you can do with a little colour and turmeric! So naturally, we gathered the best of the best together and thought up something totally different to what we’ve seen and done ourselves on other styled shoots.”
