SHU SESSION

We asked Isabel, Senior Stylist at Ashbourne, to go to L’Oreal HQ in London for a Shu Uemura photo shoot. Isabel was briefed to create a futuristic Tokyo inspired model and we think the final look below perfectly captures this.

“I created a mood board showing inspiration for the brand and to help communicate on the day to Shu squad. The trends to choose from included shittori texture , vintage Kawai , natural kei, samurai strength. My chosen theme  samurai strength represented strength, shine , structure, power , control and warrior. Make up artists, professional photographers and the Shu team were there to help create the look, with Ben Hards being the team director to my chosen theme.”

LONDON FASHION WEEK SS19

Reporting backstage from London Fashion Week is Zea, our senior stylist from Duffield, with the latest hair trends.

The look- We were shown the finished look which was a slicked down middle parting with sandy texture through the ends of the hair

The How-to- For this we used a light spritz of water spray to create a precise middle parting, then applied Techni art siren waves. Using a dressing out brush I smoothed the hair so that it was tight and flat, then dried it and applied Techni art volume architect ensuring the hair was smooth throughout. Crepe paper was used to wrap around the hair to ensure the hair is kept together whilst we styled the lengths and ends. We were creating a wet textured look through the ends to do this we used Techni Art dual styler bouncy and tender in thick sections through the back applying a lot of product and diffused it until dry.

It was then time for the rehearsal, when the models came back I started on my second model and repeated the process until I got to the diffusing step. Then we hit a stumbling block as the electricity cut out 30 minutes before the models had to be dressed. As we were diffusing the hair there was nothing we could do until the electrics were fixed which was really stressful as the models hair was still wet! Thankfully they managed to get the electric back on so managed to finish the models on time.

I had great time working backstage and can’t wait to hopefully be back next season.

THE L’OREAL COLOUR TROPHY 2018

Three teams from our salons have made it through the first round and into the semi-finals of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Award 2018. This means that they will now go head to head with salons at the North West Regional Semi-Final event on Monday 16th of April in Liverpool. The teams include stylists from the salons in Belper, The Old Hall (St Peters Churchyard) and Ashbourne who all took part in a photoshoot to create their entry images.

During the first round, hundreds of photographic images from across the country were judged by the most influential names in hairdressing, including Angel Montague-Sayers who is also judging the South West and Northern Irish heats. The salon group fought off stiff competition and were successfully chosen to go through to the next round of the competition – the Regional Semi- Finals.

Stylist: Drew Colourist: Millie

The next stage of the competition will put the team through their paces as they now look to create a truly inspirational, contemporary colour, complemented by trend-driven styling and finish. The team of judges will be looking for work that is exceptionally executed and technically precise.

Stylist: Emily

“We were delighted to have all three of our entries selected by the judges and we now have a team competing in each of the categories at the regional final. We enter the L’Oreal Colour Trophy every year to ensure that the techniques we use in salon are at the forefront of British hairdressing and it’s great fun for all the team involved. We’re looking forward to the next stage and are taking a bus full of our apprentices and younger stylists with us to cheer on the teams taking part.” Sally Montague

Stylist: Lorna

At each Regional Semi-Final six successful teams will be announced and they will go forward to compete at the prestigious L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final in London this June.

LORNA IN BARCELONA

ID ARTISTS IN BARCELONA

Sun, sea and a sensational line-up of guest artists were the order of the day when the L’Oréal Professionnel ID Artists enjoyed a three-day education trip. The L’Oréal Academia, Barcelona was the stunning venue for 63 ID Artists who were all there to prepare for the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Backstage Live Tour, which kicks off this today visiting 10 cities in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

LORNA’S DIARY

On day one I had some free time before the first meet up so I went for a paella lunch with some of the ID Artists before exploring Barcelona. During the welcome meeting there was inspirational talks from the L’Oréal team and the Rush Art team and then a briefing on the colour trophy hair show. We were shown demonstrations on each look that we have to create on the colour trophy tour which I will be taking part in and competing in. After the meeting there was a drinks reception dinner followed by a night out in Barcelona.
On the second day, the morning started with an in depth demonstration of the two main styling looks for the colour trophy tour. This was then followed by the ID artist team practicing the two looks on dolls heads in pairs. In the afternoon we took it in turns to make pom poms out of hair and make wigs, using extensions the colourists had coloured in the morning. That evening we had a tapas dinner and drinks with all of the ID artists and L’Oréal team.

Stuart Chapman, ID Artist project manager, said: “Talented guest artists , our beautiful Barcelona Academia and 63 passionate ID Artists all combined to make this a very memorable trip as we fully prepare the ID Artists for their presentations at the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Backstage Live Tour.”

The ID Artist programme from L’Oréal Professionnel has one goal – to find talented individuals who could be the future stars of the hairdressing industry and work with them to further develop their talent and discover their full potential. We encourage out team to audition and our current or former ID Artists include Lizzie (Sadler Gate), Deesh (Duffield), Laura (Belper), Alice and Imogen (Ashbourne) and Lorna (The Old Hall).

INSTANT HIGHLIGHTS

INSTANT HIGHLIGHTS

Angel and Zea were the first to see Instant Highlights when they took part in the L’Oreal Professionnel UK launch shoot in January and last week our stylists were all trained on the new  techniques at The Old Hall. This entirely new service is designed for the time poor who need a lightening appointment in just 30 minutes. Find out more below…

What are Instant Highlights?

A game-changing in-salon lightening technique that gives you  face framing highlights in half an hour thanks to a specific lightening cream and heated hair iron that cut out the usual development time.

Why Instant Highlights instead of my usual highlights or balayage?

Here’s the deal – it won’t replace your full head of highlights (because the whole point is not to take so much time), but if natural looking balayage is your thing then instant highlights could easily be added to your Cut and Blow-dry.

Why? Because it has the same lightening effect (up to 6 levels on un-dyed virgin hair) as regular highlights, but in an express time limit.

How does it work?

First step, choose your look from the options below with your stylist:

1. InstaContouring – 5-10 face framing pieces.

2. Instalights – 10-15 woven highlights all over your head.

3. Instarevive – up to 15 pieces give a grown out balayage a good old refresh.

4. Instapop – add block sections of pastel colour.

How much does it cost?

Short hair £32

Medium length hair £35

Long hair £38

Our pricing includes Smartbond but any toners or colourful hair will be added to the prices above.

Please ask your stylist if you have any questions about Instant Highlights which is now available in all salons.

ID ARTIST

Earlier this summer Lorna, senior stylist at the Old Hall, successfully auditioned to become a L’Oreal ID Artist. Led by some of the hairdressing industry’s biggest names, ID ARTISTS are coached in the latest catwalk looks, cut and styling techniques, session hairdressing, product innovation and the latest L’Oréal Professionnel seasonal trends. The two-year mentoring programme covers both colour and cutting and styling and has become one of the most sought-after educational opportunities for young hairdressers, inspiring those with an eye for fashion and unique creative expression

LORNA’S DIARY

As I attended the introduction to ID Artist in Leeds I was feeling super excited about the two year journey that I am about to start with L’Oréal. The first day’s session involved learning the importance of social media in the hair styling industry, getting colour trend savvy for AW/17 and a preview of L’Oréal’s new metallic colour range. In addition to this I got to see a demo of two different hair cuts from Saks art team members.
The session ended with Andrew Barton giving us all an insight into the world of being a celebrity hairdresser. Listening to Andrew’s career was very inspiring and left me feeling more motivated than ever to improve and develop my skills as a hair stylist. At the end of the day all of the member’s of the ID artist team’s were invited to a night of bowling, food and drinks. This was a really nice opportunity to meet more of the great people who I will be working and training alongside in the coming years.
During the second day at ID Artist I learned the importance of presenting yourself properly on stage and how to engage with an audience and keep them interested. There was a hands-on styling session with Luke Pluckrose (a session stylist with Saks) and a cutting session with Sarah Clarke-Lees (a member of the Saks art team). These sessions were great as I learned new sectioning techniques and how to use them to create a choppy, layered haircut. We then finished the day with a team building exercise which involved all of the groups acting out a Disney film of their choice.
My first two day’s at ID Artist were amazing and I cannot wait for the next event!

BRONZED BLONDE

THE BLONDE EDIT

Last month Lizzie and Millie headed to London to take part in the L’Oreal Professionnel Blonde Edit alongside a group of other L’Oreal Portfolio salon teams.  They were given a brief to create one of three blonde colour trends and the pair chose Bronzed Blonde.

TREND ALERT: BRONZED BLONDE

Bronzed blonde is ideal for those taking the first steps towards more natural blonder tones and is a glossy, post holiday look. This ultra soft freehand service uses honey caramel tones for a bronzed glow and is ideal for clients who want to add more definition and contrast to overprocessed hair.

‘The day was a fabulous experience and it was great to explore more ideas with Mabel’s hair. I can’t wait to start using the new bronzed blonde techniques at Sadler Gate!’ Millie King

‘We spent the day at L’Oréal headquarters for the blonde edit which was a great experience from start to finish. We wanted to create a natural bronzed look to shy away from the ombré look and inspire clients with a greater variety of tones.’ Lizzie Fox

We always tailor blonde tones to suit your colouring and taste, ask to your stylist about which blonde tones will work for you.To make an appointment with Lizzie (Salon Manager and Colour Specialist) or Millie (Stylist) please call the Sadler Gate salon on 01332 203 302 or book online via our website.

Below: The final Blonde Edit looks are blushed blonde, bronzed blonde and plati-nude.
